Alex Secret Diary

Alex Secret Diary consists of a series of drawings made with oil pastels on paper and printed texts on transparent vinyl, which recount part of Escobedo’s personal diary and quote some of their HIV+ peers. The drawings and texts evidence a constant process, marking time and alluding to trauma, care, and joy of a marginalized person; to their surroundings and daily life. The installation of the drawings in the lobby at SOMA as well as the texts displayed throughout the building, create an ambiguous narrative that may or may not be linear, depending on each viewer’s journey inside the exhibition space.

Alexander Escobedo (San Diego, Tijuana, 1994) investigates the formation and sustainability of identity through drawing and performance, among other disciplines. Currently, their work employs everyday actions—such as walking or cleaning—to create emotional connections among marginalized individuals, thus addressing themes of affectivity and care while also considering these interactions as artistic sources that enable the materialization of both individual and collaborative projects. Escobedo holds  a Bachelor's degree in Visual Arts and a Bachelor's degree in Literature from the University of California (Santa Cruz, USA, 2017). In 2022, they had their first solo exhibition in México (Chiflado/a, Compás 88, CDMX) and has participated in various group shows in both the United States and Mexico. They received several scholarships and awards during their studies in Santa Cruz.
